Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s lips. However, what exactly is meant by this often remains quite unclear, precisely because AI serves so many fears, but also dreams. Intelligent machines that take over and take over human activities, that could replace jobs, partnerships or even governments, are causing a stir.
Utopias and hopes on the one hand, fears and dystopias on the other are by no means a novelty of the current AI hype. Building thinking, intelligent machines is not an expression of the hypertechnologized capitalism of the 21st century, but rather an ancient desire that is deeply rooted in Western cultural history. A desire that is also so fascinating because AI challenges the boundaries of the human and the machine.
What opportunities does the use of artificial intelligence (AI) offer? What are the challenges? How concretely is AI already shaping our everyday lives? What are its limits? And what image of humanity is behind the development of AI? We would like to discuss these and other questions with media scientist and AI researcher Ariana Dongus – and with you!

Ariana Dongus is a critical media scholar, teacher, and researcher based in Berlin.
Her research has led her to Istanbul, Diyarbekir in Southeastern Turkey, and Northern Iraq, focusing on refugees, migration, and technology. From 2018 to 2022, she was a research associate at the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe (HfG), where she taught media theory and coordinated KIM, a research group on critical studies of artificial intelligence.
In 2021, she received the AI Newcomer Award 2021, awarded by the German Society for Informatics and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Dongus’s work is dedicated to the social aspects of AI, digital labor exploitation, and invisible infrastructures, aiming to critique today’s digital economies from below. She is currently a Research Fellow at TU Dresden, exploring new forms of labor in relation to machine ‘intelligence’.
