Always in Beta? AI, Data, and Labor in Experimental Economies of Exclusion

From the event description:
In her research, Ariana Dongus investigates the hidden processes behind AI systems, from dataset assembly to deployment, while challenging the dominant view of AI as a product of Western technological progress. By highlighting the overlooked contributions of marginalized labor and global migration, the talk reframes AI as a reflection of globalized social relations rather than autonomous technology. Central to the discussion is how refugee camps are used as “laboratories” for testing unproven technologies, where practices like biometric registration and gig work exploit marginalized populations in what Ariana Dongus calls “experimental economies of exclusion.” This perspective emphasizes the human intelligence and creativity behind AI, while also addressing its failures and the resistance against these exploitative systems.
(Link)Correlations: Forum for AI in Art & Design is an interdisciplinary event held from December 11–13, 2024, at HfG Offenbach. It brings together artists, designers, educators, and theorists to explore the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on art and design. Through lectures, workshops, panels, and exhibitions, the forum addresses AI’s cultural, ethical, and societal implications, as well as its potential as both a tool and subject for artistic experimentation. The event is free and open to the public.
